KEMET Components Redesign
KEMET Electronics Corporation is a leading global supplier of electronic components, including the broadest selection of capacitor technologies in the industry, and an expanding range of electromechanical devices, electromagnetic compatibility solutions and supercapacitors. KEMET came to DD9, my partner agency on this project, and I took the role of Lead UX Designer.
Site Mapping
Our first challenge was making sense of KEMET’s existing content hierarchy. They were hoping to integrate their three main portals, all with differing brand styles. We built a site map that organized the content under one main home page and 4 sub-directories.
Wireframing
After client approval, we began work on low-fidelity wireframes. These are simple layouts, usually designed in grayscale, to show the client our suggested UX solution without distracting too much with brand styles and colors. As we began to design these wireframes, our second unique challenge arose: How do we make the product browsing experience more user-friendly, and more apt to convert?
KEMET sells hundreds of thousands of electrical items through their online portal, for a number of different industries. We built a “product widget” that gave KEMET users easy shortcuts to popular search criteria.
We also built out a “Mega Menu” as a quick browse solution that could be implemented across every page on the site without changing the structure of the pages themselves. Our client contact was able to verify the most searched terms over the past year, which helped us to organize the menu in a user-friendly way, by product, industry, and application.
Finally, we re-organized the content on their single product pages to make it easier for engineers to easily find the stats they need with a quick browse of the page.
High-fidelity Mockups
After approval of our low-fidelity mockups, we began designing high-fidelity mockups, incorporating disparate brand styles and adding photos and textures where appropriate.
